Brave Conversations – Transforming Workplace Conflict
Fall 2021 – REGISTRATION OPEN
Dates: Webinars are September 14, 21, 28 and October 5, 2021 from 1:00-3:00pm EST.
Registration Deadline: September 7, 2021
Many of us tend to fear conflict, but when approached consciously it is an opportunity for personal and organizational growth. Leaders in the workplace can develop their capacity to nurture “brave space” for conflict. Conflict effectiveness starts with each of us developing an understanding of our own conflict habits, patterns, and reactions, on the unconscious and physical level, and developing our capacities to sit in the fire when tensions heat up.
Conflict management involves supporting others to develop their own conflict skills. In a workplace context, the need for brave conversations may arise when giving and receiving feedback, managing workplace change, advocating for an equity and inclusion approach, working in teams, or simply navigating lunchroom dynamics.
- Learn to identify your conflict triggers, and develop skills to address them;
- Identify your own conflict capacities, and where there is room for growth;
- Make your unconscious mind your conflict ally, rather than your enemy;
- Assess the stage of a conflict and what that means for intervention;
- Develop basic negotiation skills;
- Prepare emotionally and strategically for a brave conversation;
- Learn a framework to support brave conversations.
This online course is a bundled learning approach of four modules. You will have access to the course content through the Anima Learning Management System.
Each online module includes:
- a 2 hour interactive Zoom webinar (small and large group format) with senior Anima faculty;
- a self-directed video lecture component (~20minutes);
- associated downloadable handouts;
At the end of the four modules, you will be asked to complete a short course assessment (20 multiple choice questions) and upon passing, be awarded your online course badge (four course badges are required for the full Inclusive Management Certificate).
The four online modules include:
- Triggers and Self-Management in Conflict
This module focuses on the role of emotional triggers in our capacity to deal with conflict. Participants will have the opportunity to understand their own patterns, identify when those patterns are helpful and not so helpful, and explore new strategies to engage in brave conversations.
- Deep Listening Skills
This module supports participants to identify what might be going on underneath the surface of challenging behaviour. Participants will learn to listen for other people’s underlying motivations, feelings, and needs.
- Conflict, Escalation, and Power
This module will cover a framework for assessing the role that escalation and power play in a conflict, and support people to develop the capacity to intervene when they witness unjust or troubling behaviour.
- Identity Awareness and Ally Interventions
This module will cover awareness of your own and other social identities. This session will cover how to interrupt micro-inequities, and initiate the brave conversations required to build and maintain an inclusive team culture.
This course is part of the Anima Inclusive Management Online Certificate. When you complete all four online certificate courses recognizing skill proficiency in the areas of facilitation, diversity, management and conflict, you will receive the Anima Inclusive Management Certificate in downloadable format.

Day One draws on neurology and emotional intelligence research, as participants explore their own personal habits and reactions to conflict. Participants will have the opportunity to understand their own patterns, identify when those patterns are helpful and not so helpful, and explore new strategies to engage in brave conversations. They will also reflect on what they might know about the motivations, needs, and feelings of other people involved in the conflict or brave conversation.
Day Two builds on the personal awareness work from Day One and combines it with principles of workplace restoration and mediation to support participants to hone and practice their skills for conflict intervention. Participants will learn a framework for assessing the role that power is playing in a conflict, and will practice basic negotiation skills. Participants will have the opportunity to roleplay a brave conversation that they would like to have.

“The Inclusive Management Certificate was a great occasion to learn from the enormous experience of Anima facilitators and to experience their approach in action. The constant self-reflection and practice throughout the modules enabled and encouraged me to try out the strategies presented instantly. I applied something I learned in the course in every meeting, customer conversation or training I’ve led since.”
“Anima’s Inclusive Management courses offer exploration into the being, as much as the practicing, of inclusive leadership in complex environments. Anima’s courses were invaluable spaces for me to reconnect with my leader within while recovering from burnout. I was prompted to reflect on the impact of my own power and privilege when leading and working with diverse teams.”
“This Brave Conversations course helped give me the grounding, tools and confidence to approach hard conversations effectively. Being aware of, and managing my own responses ensures my discussions are helpful, supportive, and help move my organization forward. Skilled facilitation and clear, accessible content made this an excellent and applicable course.”
“In Brave Conversations, Anima guided the group to practice new ways of engaging in workplace conversations, especially about race. The deeply memorable experiences of the course have prepared me for important conversations that I never imagined would be possible for me. I will always be grateful to the leaders and participants in this life-changing course.”
“Refreshing in content and in form, I came away with new skills and renewed confidence to use them immediately. A big personal takeaway was to understand that reluctance to engage in conflict does not eliminate it, but prolongs it. To anyone who wonders, “Why engage when it would only make things worse?” we need to ask, “What’s ‘worse’?”
